Freedom is referred to often in the Bible. God’s people found themselves enslaved on more than one occasion. Often it was due to their own spiritual disobedience and they needed to be delivered. Jesus came to free us from sin, death and anything that enslaves us. John 8:31-32 says, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

God tells us how to accept his freedom and what to do with it in Galatians 5:1 and 13-14. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh, rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’.”

God has given us the freedom of choice. We can choose Him or our own selfish ambitions. In choosing the latter, we become slaves to our own evil desires. True freedom is only found in Him because He is truth and “the truth will set us free.”
