John 8:7 is a very well-known verse in which Jesus tells an adulterous woman’s accusers, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” It is very easy to focus on the sins of others and forget that we ourselves are sinners. We all sin. Some sins can bring about more severe consequences but all sin separates us from God. Although we need to recognize sin as sin and we shouldn’t condone it, we also have to remember that God is the only one qualified to judge. In Galatians 6 the Bible says, “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.” Jesus went to people in love and sought to restore them or bring them to a relationship with the Father. He did not approach people with condemnation. As Christians, we are to be followers of Christ, to follow His example. I think in order to do this, the first thing we need to do is lay down our stones.
