As we begin a new year, we may look back and reflect on 2019 and what has passed in those months. Let’s reflect for a moment on our relationship with God. Do you have any regrets? When you look back over the past 12 months can you say that you’ve grown closer to Him, stayed about where you were a year ago or have you grown away from Him? If you find yourself in one of the latter two categories, can you pinpoint what or who in your life got you off track. Ask yourself what takes up most of your time and thoughts, what are your distractions? It may be time to leave those things in the past or at least time to reprioritize their place in your life. As Christians, God tells us that the greatest commandment is to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. If this is true of us then we should be growing closer to Him every day but we humans get so easily distracted. We get focused on our jobs, our children, our human relationships, sports, and so many other things that become idols and keep our focus off of God. When that happens, you may start seeing things fall apart in your life because God is who holds all things together. We need Him and when we start to replace Him with other things then we can start to feel empty. Here is the good news, God gives new beginnings. Isaiah 43; 18-19 says, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” So, moving forward, put the distractions and hinderances of this past year behind you and start new. Make God and your relationship with Him your number one priority. If you do that, then at the end of 2020, you can look back with no regrets.
