Have you ever tried to imagine what it would have been like to be present on the day Jesus was crucified? I have always imagined the darkness of a stormy day. I imagine crowds of people, dust in the air and extreme sorrow. I watched The Passion of the Christ when it came out in theaters and I have not been able to watch it again since. To see my perfect Jesus hanging in agony on the cross, for me, is heartbreaking. Thankfully, God didn’t end the story with the cross.
On the third day, there were women who went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’s body for burial. They were surprised when they arrived and the tomb was empty. Luke 24: 4-8 says, “While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightening stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ Then they remembered His words.” Jesus had raised people from the dead before but, somehow, in their grief or maybe disbelief that it was possible, the women had forgotten what Jesus had told them. Jesus was risen just as He had said He would be. He defeated death and Hell. It was the third day and our Savior was alive! We serve a risen Savior! Hallelujah!
