Many people struggle with worry and anxiety. Because we live in a fallen world, there are many troubling things that go on in our individual lives and in the world around us every day. It can be easy to become focused on our circumstances and forget that God is in control of our circumstances. The first step to battling worry and anxiety is to make sure that our focus remains on Him.

Philippians 4:67 states, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Did you know that Paul wrote this passage while imprisoned? He did not allow his circumstances to dictate his attitude. He knew that worry had no power to change his situation. Worry has no power over anything, but God is powerful enough to take a man in prison and give him “a peace that surpasses all understanding.”

Another thing we must do to defeat worry is to truly trust God. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” We are not alone. God wants us to come to Him in prayer, give our burdens over to Him and let Him replace them with joy, peace and hope. It’s not an easy thing to “let go” of all the things that weigh us down. We need to be in that constant state of prayer asking God to help us to trust Him in all things. He is more powerful than our worry.
